A Friend’s Trust

By Juni G., 4th Grade

In Ancient Greek times, there was an island named Sicily. Pythias and Damon, who were noble friends, trusted each other a lot. King Dionysius was a cruel and feared person. The villagers scarcely interacted with him. Though Pythias was innocent, King Dionysius accused him of treason and decided to kill him. Pythias, who was extremely sad, requested to say farewell to his dear family. King Dionysius agreed on one condition, which was still pretty bad. Pythias must choose a hostage to stay in his place.

Damon, who was Pythias’s most loyal friend, volunteered to be a hostage. Damon completely trusted Pythias to return. “I promise to come back,” vowed Pythias. But he was delayed because of the bad weather along the way. King Dionysius demanded a crucifix to be prepared for Damon.

Soon the dreaded execution day arrived. Pythias, who was panting heavily, burst into the crowd at the last second! The people cheered because Pythias finally came. King Dionysius was deeply moved in his heart by the noble pair, Pythias and Damon. King Dionysius pardoned Damon and Pythias and promised to be as great a friend to them as they were to each other. One thing you have to remember is that friends that have a deep trust can transform even the hardest heart.
