Obey Your Parents

By Joshua B., Age 9

Crete existed from 2200-1450 years ago. King Minos was ruling Crete at that time. King Minos thought that Daedalus the maze builder helped Ariadne and Theseus. He was wrong. Icarus, who was Daedalus' son, was sadly imprisoned with his father in the Labyrinth. That was a mistake. Since Daedalus was a mastermind, he had an idea. He built a pair of strong wings for himself. Then Daedalus made small wings for Icarus. But Daedalus had a warning: do not fly too high. One night they fastened on their wings with wax. They headed to fly to Sicily. When they flying, Icarus forgot about everything. He was too proud. His wax started to melt and he fell.

Icarus was too proud of himself because he could fly. He wanted to know what was up there. Icarus whispered to himself, “I should fly up and look at the sun master being pulled by his horses.” Icarus saw the horses fastened to the sun chariot. Icarus happily flew higher until he could almost touch it, but the sun started to melt the wax. The wings broke and he was falling into the water. He screamed to his father, but it was too late.

Daedalus turned to see Icarus falling headlong into the water. Daedalus was shocked at what had just happened. Daedalus sadly looked with sorrowing eyes at the sea. He felt sad. The Icarian Sea was named after Icarus, the boy that didn’t listen. Icarus, who did not listen to his father, became known as the boy who flew too close to the sun. The moral is to listen to your parents.
