Our Summer Classes
Our summer term runs July 7 to August 29, 2025.
-
Sundays 3:45-4:45 p.m. ET | Ms. Deanna Heikkinen | Tuition: $600
In this joyful introduction to poetry, students will read, copy, and recite carefully selected poems that delight, surprise, and make them think. Likely selections include The Porcupine by Ogden Nash, At the Zoo by Thackeray, poems by Lewis Carroll and Shel Silverstein, The Tyger by William Blake, and timeless favorites from Mother Goose and Robert Louis Stevenson. Through these rich texts, students will explore literary concepts such as rhyme, repetition, metaphor, and personification while building vocabulary and confidence with language. Guided in-class discussions will help them connect intellectually and emotionally with the poems and recognize how words can be used with precision and playfulness. To keep things simple, all poems will be provided in a printable or tablet-friendly format—no books need to be purchased.

Tuesdays 6:00-7:00 p.m. ET | Ms. Deanna Heikkinen | Tuition: $600
As students approach middle school, they encounter more complex texts. This course helps them shift from simply understanding to analyzing and integrating ideas. We use a mix of fiction and non-fiction to teach strategies such as note-taking, asking questions while reading, and partner reading. Even avid readers benefit, as academic reading requires different skills than reading for pleasure. All reading materials will be supplied in a printable or tablet-friendly format - no books need to be purchased.
-
Sundays 5:00-6:00 p.m. ET | Ms. Deanna Heikkinen | Tuition: $600
Our Literature Club invites students to explore beautiful, classic works of literature in a guided and engaging format. The curriculum is organized into four themed units - Greek myths, classic stories, poetry, and Shakespeare - with two weeks devoted to each. Selections include child-friendly adaptations of As You Like It and Romeo & Juliet, along with shorter, age-appropriate readings.
To make participation simple for families, we provide a custom reader that can be printed or used as a PDF on a tablet, so there is no need to purchase separate books.
Each week, students complete a short reading assignment at home and then join a guided in-class discussion. During class, we build vocabulary using context clues and introduce foundational literary analysis concepts such as metaphor, simile, and onomatopoeia.
This is not a traditional open-discussion book club, nor is it based on an IEW workbook. Rather, it’s a thoughtfully structured class designed to deepen both intellectual understanding and emotional connection with timeless stories. -
Students will learn memory and delivery techniques as they write and present five speeches: self-introductory, narrative, expository, persuasive, and impromptu.
Email us at info@rosewritingcenter.com if you are interested and we will schedule a group time!

We can teach any of the curricula above in private classes. Reach out if you’d like to discuss whether private classes are the right fit for your child!
